Runyan Visits Joint Base Staging Area for Hurricane Sandy Relief
Washington, D.C. – On Monday, November 19th, Congressman Jon Runyan (R-NJ) visited Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, to tour staging operations for forces assisting in the Hurricane Sandy recovery of the New Jersey Coast and New York City metro area.
“Our service members have done a fantastic job in quickly organizing and assisting in the recovery of New Jersey and the New York City metro area,” said Runyan. “While there is still much work to be done, I am optimistic that recovery for our region is well underway. The Joint Base has once again shown what an integral part they play in South Jersey and our overall national security and homeland defense. I commend all of the Army Reserve Soldiers who have worked diligently to ensure that this disaster relief effort has moved forward smoothly. These citizen-soldiers have the capability to assist any community that is suffering from a natural disaster in a short amount of time. I look forward to my continued work on behalf of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and the Army Reserve to ensure the swiftest recovery for our region.”
"Our Army Reserve Soldiers and Civilians have done an outstanding job in using their unique skills and training to render aid to their fellow community members before, during and in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy/Winter Storm Athena," said Maj. Gen. William D. Razz Waff, Commanding General of the 99th Regional Support Command and senior commander of Fort Dix, N.J., and Fort Devens, Mass. "This historic support to civil authorities made possible by the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act allows our Citizen-Soldiers to rally behind the communities in which they live, work and train. It also highlights the role of the Army Reserve as the Army's Operational Reserve, and the direct access the Army has to the Army Reserve. It is absolutely the right thing to do in the wake of this unprecedented natural disaster."
During the tour of JB MDL, Congressman Runyan was given an overview and tour of the entire staging area, briefed by those organizing relief efforts on the base, and had the opportunity to meet with service members who are supporting this critical mission. On Sunday November 18 2012, Congressman Runyan toured the Jersey Shore with Vice President Joe Biden.
Congressman Runyan is a Member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Veterans Affairs Committee. He serves as the Chairman of the Veteran Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs.
