Runyan Comments on Findings From Oyster Creek Special Inspection
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jon Runyan (NJ-3) issued the following statement on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) findings from its special inspection into the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Facility’s handling of Hurricane Sandy.
“I am pleased that the NRC found the performance of Oyster Creek personnel during Hurricane Sandy acceptable and emergency actions to be timely,” stated Runyan. “Although this performance was acceptable the NRC did identify several minor areas where Oyster Creek staff can improve. I encourage the NRC and Oyster Creek to learn from this inspection and use the lessons of Hurricane Sandy to help improve the overall safety of the plant. While Hurricane Sandy was a highly unusual event, we must be prepared should another natural disaster occur.”
On October 29th Hurricane Sandy made landfall in southern New Jersey. During this time period Oyster Creek had been shut down for refueling. Due to water levels exceeding NRC thresholds Oyster Creek declared an unusual event and later an alert, as is standard protocol. As a result of the alert status the NRC conducted a special investigation.
